To Wolfeboro: A special thank you
I would like to thank the many people and businesses who helped make the stay of France's President Sarkozy a success. He and his family had a wonderful time here and brought some great world wide exposure to the Town of Wolfeboro. When I was first contacted in March by a friend of mine, who is also a friend of the President, about his possibly coming here I really did not know what I was getting into. I knew he would need a property with privacy and of substantial size. After some calls I had 2 possible properties for him to stay and the property that made the most sense was the Appe property.I spoke with Mike and Irene about the possible rental and they were willing to rent but I do not think they knew what they were getting into either. The visits from the French security people and the U.S. Secret Service and their requirements were more than you have with a normal rental. Mike and Irene were more than gracious and spent a lot of time helping me set up for the Presidential visit and I owe them dearly.
I had to arrange for many of their activities to include renting a boat for them. Unfortunately, I did not know about the boat rental until it was late in the rental season and no local companies had availability of a boat for the necessary time frame. I called all around the lake and Bob Andrews of Anchor Marine at Weirs Beach said he may be able to help and he did. When the President decided to extend his stay, Bob made sure we could keep the boat for the additional period and was a big help.
The President and his family are into biking and tennis. They needed bikes to rent which also meant the security people needed bikes, which is a lot of bikes. Where they came up with so many bikes and could take the time to fit everyone was wonderful Another thank you to Nordic Skier Sports who went above and beyond making sure bikes and helmets fit everyone, gave trail maps, repaired bikes, picked up bikes and were great to deal with.
The Wolfeboro Tennis Club allowed the President and his family to play on their courts which was very generous. It made security easy and it is a great place to play. A very special thank you goes to Ruth Schilleriff who opened the courts for us and helped whenever she could. She is an asset to the tennis club.
Black's Paper Store was the place for the out of town papers, The Wolfetrap, Garwoods, Dockside for lunch or dinner and all the shops in town were places to visit and find gifts. The Wolfeboro Inn, the Lake Motel and the Allen A were places for security and staff people to stay.
Most of all I would like to thank the people of Wolfeboro for giving them a warm welcome and helping to make their stay a very enjoyable stay.
